Hiram Chaney, better known as "Dad" passed away at his home in this city at one o'clock Tuesday morning and was laid to rest in Lincoln cemetery Wednesday.

Hiram Chaney was one of the few living veterans of the two wars, the Mexican and Civil, in which he took an active part. He was in his 91st year. He was born in Clay county Missouri on (May 17), 1824. His parents Nathan and Martha Chaney, had come to Clay county from Kentucky. Hiram married Martha Ann Thompson October 2, 1847 in Clay county, Missouri.

At the outbreak of the Mexican war, Hiram enlisted in the 1st Missouri Calvary and fought under General Wool in the campaign of the north in Mexico. He told of one battle where 1000 American soldiers drove 5000 of the enemy from entrenchments, capturing 15 cannon. After this fight Mr. Chaney took inventory and found eight bullet holes in his clothes but not a scratch on his person. He said he knew the bullets were flying rather thick around him, but a little surprised when he learned just how thick they were.
He served in the 48th Missouri Calvary in the Civil War and was in several hard campaigns during that struggle.

Mr. Chaney moved from Clay county Missouri about 35 years ago to Johnson county Kansas where they resided ten years. They moved to Lebo about 27 years ago, where he has since resided. Since his wife's death in 1904, Dad made his home here with his son Jim.

Four sons and four daughters, 40 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren live to mourn his loss.

The following relatives from out of town were here for the funeral: Mr.Mrs. Scott of Kansas City; Mr.Mrs. Sanford Chaney, of Hutchinson; Mid Chaney of Emporia; Mrs. Fanny Browning, and Miss Myrtle of Ottawa; Jack Chaney, of Stanley; and Mrs. J.A.
