Frederick was the son of Adolph Richard and Elizabeth Leuthjohann Boertman of Saginaw, Michigan. He married Helen Armstrong, 22 July 1905 in Manistee, Michigan. The couple had two children: Harry W. Boertman (1906-1966), and Doris Elizabeth Boertman Triece (1908-2005). Frederick was a painter for the Pere Marquette Railroad, but he was also a musician. He taught piano and also tuned pianos in addition to his regular employment.
