Uncle Woodley was my godfather: My grandmother's brother. Woodley Carl Lewis, Sr. was born in Pensacola, Florida, May 18, 1898, and passed away, Saturday, March 8, 1982, just short of his 85th birthday. Uncle Woodley was one of 13 brothers and sisters born to Harry Henry and Sally Lewis. They were married January 2, 1879. After finishing high school, Uncle Woodley migrated to California where he had been a resident of Los Angeles for over 65 years. Uncle Woodley was a World War I veteran and received his honorable discharge in 1918. In 1923, he married Pauline Black of Omaha, Nebraska and to this union brought their one and only child, a son Woodley Carl Lewis Jr.(also on find a grave) who played defensive back/offensive end for the National Football League's Los Angeles Rams (1950-1955), Chicago Cardinals (1956-1958), and Dallas Cowboys (1960).

He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. Uncle Woodley was very active in his club activities until the time of his death. He was a charter member of the Utopian Social Club (1925). He was a drummer in the American Legion Ben Bowie Post #228, Drum and Bugle Corps for many years. He was presented with a lifetime Gold Membership Card. He was a member of St. John Lodge #5 and a member of Egyptian Temple # 5. He also crossed the burning sands to become a 32-degree Mason. Uncle Woodley has two grandchildren, Craig and Page Lewis. His daughter in law Mitzi, and a great-grandchild, Chance. Plus numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews and great-great-great-nieces and nephews and cousins. Uncle Woodley was a real likable gentleman. He was friendly and always had a smile and loved life. "Bowie Bowie" and "Scoop Scoop" his relatives and friends affectionately called him. He has been missed. He is buried at Rosedale Cemetery, Los Angeles, California.
