                          DIED.

COLTON.—On June 11th, Calvin S. Colton, in the seventy third year of his age.

The deceased was born in Stoddard, New Hampshire, Sept. 18, 1799, and was the fourth son of Rev. Abisha Colton. For more than twenty years he has been the only surviving member of the family, and now at a good old age, has been gathered to his people, leaving a wife and seven children. He was one of the early settlers of DeKalb County, coming here in 1839 from Benington County Vermont where he spent most of his early life.

For the last few years, his health has been gradually failing, and at times he has been a great sufferer. As he neared the eternal shore and realized that his time on earth was short, he felt, and it is believed, yielded to the claims of religion. He spoke feelingly of the animosities that had unhappily existed with some of his neighbors, saying that he wished it understood that he forgave all, as he hoped to be forgiven. We feel how vain are any words that we may speak, yet we cannot forbear to say that he had many good qualities concealed beneath a plain exterior. His affection for his friends was deep, sincere and lasting.

His veneration for his parents was very noticeable. Filial duty was to him the greater part of religion, and never has the command to honor father and mother been more religiously observed by any; and we may add that the promise of prolonged life has been faithfully fulfilled.

   Thus, one by one, our friends depart,
     A father now, and brother gone;
   Lord, help once more each stricken heart
     To humbly say, Thy will be done.
