Violet Jane (McCallum) McIlwain was born and raised in York County, South Carolina.
Her father James died when she was 1 year old in 1841. Her mother Nancy died when Violet was 4 years old in 1844.
Violet, along with her 2 sisters, were raised by their uncle Peter McCallum.
[On 10 May 1847, James' brother Peter McCallum became legal guardian of James/Nancy's orphaned daughters (Catherine, Mary, and Violet) Case 7, file 274. Last settlement to V.J. McIlwain 4 Jan 1864.]
At the age of 13, " Miss Violet Jane McCallum married Charles McIlwain on 2 June 1853" [Yorkville Miscellany, from "York, SC Newspapers Marriage and Death Notices 1823-1865"]
Her husband Charles McIlwain was born in 1832 and died about 1866. During the Civil War, he was a Private in Company E of the 17th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry (Captain T. B. Meachum's Company). He was captured at the siege of Petersburg, Virginia in March 1865. The war ended one month later and Charles was released as a Prisoner of War at Pt. Lookout, Maryland in June 1865.
Charles apparently dies before 1870 because he is not listed in the 1870 census (or thereafter). In the 1880 census, Violet Jane is listed as a widow. I speculate that Charles McIlwain died about 1866 from sickness carried over from his Prisoner of War days.
