Bertie Lou married twice; first on 30 April 1948 in Coos Bay, Oregon to Delwin Clifford Ruscher; they divorced in 1953; one child. She married to Christian ‘Chris’ Pluymaekers on 26 September 1953 in Reno, Storey, Nevada; 3 children. Chris and Bert initially lived in Richmond, California; then made their home for many years in Union City, California. Several years after Chris' death, Bertice bought a home in Hayward, California. She moved to Vancouver, Washington when she retired in 1992, sharing her home with a son.

Aunt Bert was a very generous and loving person; she loved to read (especially science fiction), watch movies (old and new), and eat chocolates (Sees candy was her favorite). She loved to sight-see and go new places and enjoy the company of others as they enjoyed sight-seeing new places. When she smiled it was with her whole being; her eyes would light up and her whole body would perk up; she would giggle more than laugh. She tried very hard to make those around her happy and satisfied, and was careful with her time and attention to details. She loved children and was a grandmother to any child who needed love and care. I have many happy memories of time spent with her (but too many to recount them here). She was a wonderful aunt and good friend.
