Joseph Wheeler Murphy was the son of Joseph Gillentine Murphy and his second wife Margaret Wheeler. He was known in the family as "Wheeler." He married Eliza Jane Whitaker in Jackson Co., Tennessee in 1876. Some time before 1889 Wheeler and his family moved to Nashville, where Eliza Jane (Whitaker) Murphy died in 1898. In 1912 Wheeler Murphy married Addie L. Murphy, daughter of William and Martha (Hammonds) Murphy of Maury Co., who survived him.
