Louise was named after two of her aunts, Marion Moran and Louise Shumate. She was the youngest child and only daughter of James and Virginia Moran. Louise attended Rhodes College, formerly Southwestern in Memphis, and received a Bachelor of Arts. Her studies took her next to Case Western Reserve in Ohio where she received her MA in Social Administration in 1949. She moved to New York State to pursue her career and while there met her future husband, Robert Wrisley Atkins who she married in 1961 back in her hometown of Dresden Tennessee.
