Blanche Blackwell Howard, loving Mother, wife, grandmother, great- grandmother, aunt, and friend passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2006, at the young age of 101. She was born December 3, 1904, in Manchaca, Texas, and passed away at her Austin home with her daughters by her side.

She was preceded in death by her Mother and Father, Frank and Hanna Blackwell; her husband and love of her life, Travis Howard; by two of her five daughters, Mildred Wilson of Bellaire, Texas, and Monette Howard; her son-in-law, Don Willhoite; and by her three sisters, Bruce Johnson, Bernice Green, and Beatrice Toombs.

She is survived by her three daughters, Margaret Koenig and husband, Jake, Marilyn Willhoite, Melanie Thompson and husband, Warren; her seven grandchildren, Linda, Stephen, Donilyn, Laura, Todd, Howard, and Katie; 10 great-grandchildren, Sherry, Misti, Audrey, Caitlin, Travis, Faythe, Zachary, Pete, John, and Michael; seven great-great-grandchildren, G.C., Kalissa, Samantha, Victoria, Tayler, Abigail, and Hunter; and three nieces, Blanche Elizabeth Strickland, Martha Ellen Johnson, and Frances Haverman.

Blanche Howard attended Texas State University, formerly known as Texas State Teachers College. She taught in a one room school in Creedmoor and Oakhill. She and Travis owned and operated the Travis Howard Nursery from 1929 to 1959 before retiring to the country. She loved to read and recite poetry, listen to music, travel, and work in her yard. She remained active most of her life. Her girls, family and home were her focus in life.

She was a lifelong Methodist and a current member of St. John's United Methodist Church. Her sense of humor, her strength and courage in life is greatly admired and her love of family will be greatly missed.

The family wishes to thank Hospice Austin and Family Eldercare and sitters, Mae, Trudy, and Jackie, for assisting her daughters in her care these past few years.

Visitation was Friday evening, March 17, 2006, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Funeral services were Saturday, March 18, 2006, at Cook-Walden Colonial Chapel with Reverend Bobbie Kaye Jones presiding. Interment followed at Austin Memorial Park on Hancock Drive. [Published in the Austin American-Statesman on 3/17/2006.]
