Cyrus Thurston was born in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, August 14, 1825, and died Sept. 20, 1904. His parents were Azor and Elebedy (Smith) Thurston. He was the eldest of a family of five children; four sons and a daughter. When he was quite young, Mr. Thurston emigrated to Ohio, where he grew to manhood and in 1848 married Hannah Boone Woolverton and nine children were born to the union: Celina, who died at the age of 25 in Gibson, Ind.; Albert V. passed away in Nebraska in 1888 at the age of 36; Flora Alice, two years old, died in Ohio in 1875, Allan also died in infancy, in 1866, on the farm near Galien, Mich.; and Maroni, one year old, died at Galien. In February 1888, the faithful helpmate and loving mother was laid to rest beside those of her children who were buried at Galien. The remaining children were Mrs. Elizabeth Baum, Mrs. Belle Thurston Laird, Dr. Cyrus Milton Thurston, and Mrs. Jennie Paine.
After the family left Ohio, they settled in Galien, Michigan where Cyrus Thurston was a successful farmer.
Soon after Hannah Thurston died, Mr. Thurston came to Three Oaks to reside and on July 8, 1891, he married Miss Janet H. Johnston. She died in 1913.
Mr. Thurston was an active member of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Cyrus Thurston was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on November 4, 1861 by Walter Ostrander. He was ordained an elder on May 11, 1862, by George A. Blakeslee. By 1863 he was presiding over the Galien, Michigan Branch.
