Birthplace for Elizabeth is uncertain as the only known source is report of son James in the 1880 census that she was born in Kentucky. Elizabeth was second child of Jesse and Esther (Sparks) Caton who married in Rowan Co. NC in 1787. Their first child Noah Caton was born in 1788 in NC, but Jesse is not found in the 1790 NC census and does not appear to be in the household of either of their parents. It seems likely they already left for Kentucky by 1790. Although a 1790 KY census was taken, the 1790 and 1800 schedules were burned in the War of 1812 which may account for Jesse's family being unaccounted for. Jesse was on the 1800 tax list for Clark Co. KY. Date of arrival is unknown, however absence from NC in 1790 and the statement of son James in 1880 suggests they were in KY by 1790 when Elizabeth was born.
