Son of Francis H and Abigail Smith Budge. Husband of Melissa A Hayes.
Enlisted a Springfield, Maine Aug 21, 1862 at age 21 as a Sergeant into Co A 18th Maine Infantry Regiment. Transferred Dec 19, 1862 out, and into Co A 1st Maine heavy Artillery. Promoted 2nd Lieutenant Feb 16, 1864 and transferred into Co M. He as wounded in the left had at battle of Petersburg, VA in the fatal charge June 18, 1864. He was discharged for disability July 18, 1865. He was in all the major battles of the 1st Maine heavy Artillery. He was a member of the Minnesota Grand army of the Republic.
