He received an M. D. degree in Dentistry University of Nashville, Tennessee and was a dentist like his half brother, Lyman Taft Gunn of Nashville.

"On motion, a vote of thanks was returned to Captain Joseph Lenow for donating a grave to Dr. Gunn, who was interred in Elmwood Cemetery on Thursday."
