John Witter was born March 11, 1677/78 in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut, the son of Josiah and Sarah (Crandall) Witter. In 1703, he married (1) Sarah Tefft, daughter of Samuel Tefft and Elizabeth Jenckes, in Stonington, CT. Their union bore ten (10) children: Esther(1705), Elizabeth (1706), Josiah, John, Samuel, and Ebenezer - all died at a young age, Hannah (1713), Joseph (1716), Sarah (1717), and John Jr. (1718). "Sarah was deceased by March 16, 1725 as she was listed as deceased in her father's will." (Witter, H.J, pp 10-11)

John married (2) Mary (Marsh) Lewis (born about 1677) (widow of Israel Lewis), marriage date unknown. 22 DEC 1743 may have been the death date for Mary. Their union bore five (5) children: Abigail, died young; Mary (1722) (married Amos Maxson); Abigail, died young, William, Martha (1727).

"John was admitted a freeman in Westerly, RI on January 29, 1702 and he also had registered his earmark, which was 1/2 penny under side of each ear." "Genealogies of Connecticut Families; Westerly and Its Witnesses; Virkus; Harold John Witter. Gen of Conn Fams: 'January 1755 John Witter Now Liveing In Westerly aged near 78 years hath had two Wives & a Great Number of Children. And to his two Sons Joseph and John are Children also Born.' Westerly: John Witter named a freeman in Westerly in 1727. Virkus: John Witter, Hopkinton, R.I., born 1677; married (1) Sarah Tefft. Witter: John Witter, born Stonington, Conn., 11 March 1677-8."
