HUNTRESS, FRANK GRANGER (1870–1955). Frank Granger Huntress, publisher, was born in San Antonio, Texas, on February 24, 1870, the son of Frank Granger and Frances (Montes) Huntress. He received his education at public schools with special courses in English, administration, and finance. He began his work as a newspaper boy for the San Antonio Express in 1884 and worked his way up to publisher by 1911. He went on to acquire the San Antonio Evening News as well. He also was the director of the San Antonio Loan and Trust Company and a cofounder and president of the Bexar County chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. In 1928 he was awarded the N. H. White trophy for civic welfare work. He was a member of many organizations, including the Belknap Rifles Association, American Newspaper Publishers Association, Bureau of Advertising, San Antonio Planning Board, Texas Daily Newspaper Publishers Association, National Press Association, and Advertising Federation of America. He was chairman of the board of directors of Express Publishing Company and knight commander of Court of Honor in Shriner, Texas. Huntress has been credited as one of the primary builders of San Antonio. Through the newspaper he supported the real estate business, the campaign for new roads, and the establishment of the Federal Reserve branch in San Antonio. He was noted for his dedication and loyalty to the newspapers and to San Antonio. He was acknowledged as one of the 100 notable newspaper publishers in America in his time. He was also a skilled baseball player. In December of 1906 Huntress married Katherine Johnson. He was a member and a deacon of the Christian Church. He died in his sleep in a hotel in San Antonio on July 30, 1955.
