From: Burkett History, A Compilation of the History and Descendants of William Wesley Burket & Lafayette Brock Families, by Anna Pauleene McClelland Neal, Archivist, produced by Robert L. Neal, September 1999.

Sarah Frances Powell was born in 1849 in New Albany, Indiana, just across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky. Both of her parents were of German descent and Sarah spoke German. Her mother was Sarah Jane Christison. It is said that she inherited property in Germany, but did not want to return to the 'old country' to claim it. Her father's name was possibly orginally 'Pile'. Nothing more is known of Sarah's parents or her early life.
It is known that on October 22, 1866, Sarah married Lafayette Brock in Floyd COunty Indiana. About 1884, the couple moved to Nevada, Misssouri. They had a total of 13 children.
Lafayette died in 1916 and Sarah lived on for another seven years. She was staying with her son Dave when she had a heart attack in 1923. "She died sitting in her chair during an asthma attack when her heart failed...as she was dying she said to her daughter-in-law: "Take care of yourself Freeda. I'm at the door (of heaven)now. It's so beautiful."
Sarah's obituary read:
"Mrs. Brock had lived in Vernon county about 40 years, much of the time in Nevada of late years. She was a good, old fashioned, motherly woman and her death will grieve a large circle of acquaintances. Some of the best people of Vernon county are her direct descendants, and the Herald joins with many other friends in condolences to them and to her other relatives."
