Marshall was born on August 23, 1929, in Staunton, a son of the late James H. Clement and Francis (Randolph) Miller.
Mr. Miller was proud to serve his country in the United States Air Force, which was the subject of many conversations. He served during the Korean conflict; The United Nations Air Lift Support “New Tape” in the Republic of the Congo; Operation Deep Freeze in Williams Field, Antarctica, and other numerous operations. After 14 years of service, he was Honorably Discharged with the following Medals: National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and one battle star. He retired after 23 years from Smith’s Transfer, graduated from BRCC of Weyers Cave, VA in 1979 with an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science/Agriculture Business (he was the oldest graduate of his class!); he attended Mendenhall School of Auctioneering, High Point, NC, where he received a diploma, in February 1989, and was licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia; he was a member of the American Legion, VFW/DAV and Teamsters. He had a great love for the outdoors, and was an avid deer hunter. In prior years, he attended, and was a member of Foursquare Gospel Church in Staunton, VA.
In addition to his parents, Marshall was preceded in death by a twin sister; his first wife, Carrie Frances (Farley) Miller; a son, Robert (Bobby) Miller; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Miller; a brother-in-law, Dave Benson; two nephews, Charles “Chuck” Miller and James “Jimmy” Wood; and a special friend, Lee Howdyshell.
Surviving in addition to his wife of thirty two years are two daughters, Donna Miller and Debra Root and her husband Jack all of Staunton; a son, Clement Miller and his wife Amanda of Staunton; four sisters, Colleen Mickey Benson of California, Jacqueline Miller of California, Florence Field and husband Larry all of California, and Garnet Wood of Staunton; one brother, James Olin Miller and wife Joanne of Staunton; three grandchildren, Carrie Doyle and husband Bruce of Staunton, Aaron Root and wife Kandis of Ashburn, Virginia, Jason Davis and girlfriend Brittany Traylor of Greenville; numerous nieces and nephews; and one great-grandchild on the way. Also, his beloved dogs; Homer, Kodiak, Ellie Mae, and one cat “Cat” also survive.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2014, at Green Hill Cemetery, Churchville, Virginia, by Pastor Brandon Carter.
The family will receive friends after the service at New Life Foursquare Gospel Church, 97 Williams Cousins Road, Staunton.
Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Carrie Doyle, Aaron Root, Jason Davis; a nephew, Phillip Miller; and special friends, Cliff Harris, Ryan Herndon, and Jared Higgins.
