Betty Florence Bergh, 91 of Florence, SD passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at the Webster Hospital. Burial will be on Monday, September 22, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Goodhue Lutheran Cemetery, rural Florence, SD followed by Memorial services at 11:00 a.m. at New Helgen Lutheran Church in
Betty Florence Bergh was born August 18, 1923 to Charles and Gertina (Gulbra) Knoder in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As a teenager, Betty spent her summer vacations at her grandmother Gulbra's farm near Wallace, SD. Betty helped with the household chores for her grandmother and her two uncles. During this time she and Nettie Paulson became a very good friends. When Nettie and Norris Johnson started dating they introduced Betty to Philip Bergh, who was a close friend of Norris. Betty graduated from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. Her first job was a bookkeeper at Cory's Sporting Goods Store. When Honeywell Corporation became a supplier of WW II war equipment, Betty took a position in the office, while her mother worked on the assembly line. At that time Phil was attending Brookings College and they continued to correspond via mail and infrequent visits. As Betty's family said "Once Betty met Phil no other man existed for her". Obviously the feeling was mutual as they were married on November 13, 1943 - a marriage that lasted over 61 years, until Phil passed away in 2005. As a couple Betty and Phil traveled with lefse grill in tow to the gastronomical delight of their California relatives. Throughout Betty's life she was deeply involved in community activities: 4-H Leader, Extension Club, Election judge, Circle, Florence Lutheran Parish and Council officer, Sons of Norway and Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (WELCA), and the Florence Red Hat Ladies. Betty loved gardening, quilting, card playing, visiting with family and friends. Betty loved traveling near and far (if it didn't involve an airplane)! Betty's neighbors teased that if anyone was going anywhere, Betty was ready to go along. Betty is survived by her three children: Carol Bergh, Larry Bergh, and Cathy Bergh (Allen Smith) and granddaughter, Fraya Smith-Bergh and her sister, Dorthy Bonhiver.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Bergh. Betty's kind nature and warm smile will be missed by all who knew her.
