Mrs. Melba Banks Wheeler, 78, passed away Sunday, October 30, 2011. She was the daughter of Warren G. Banks and Gertie Lee Banks Henderson, and step-daughter to Elmer M. Henderson.

She was the wife of Carl "Corky" Stewart Wheeler, who predeceased her in 2001, and the the mother of Carl Stewart Wheeler, Jr. who predeceased her in 1980.

She is survived by her son, Lee Henderson Wheeler, and her two grandchildren, Bailey Elizabeth Wheeler and Brook Carl Wheeler, of New Bern.

She is also survived by her two brothers; W. Sherwood Henderson, and wife Marie Price, of New Bern; and Claude B. Henderson, and wife Casey Price Henderson, of Westerville, OH.

She was a native of Jones County, having been raised in Maysville, where she attended the public schools and had the honor of being recognized as "Miss Jones County". She graduated from Women's College of UNC Greensboro. Professionally, she served as a Supervisor for Craven County DSS, and retired after 30 years of faithful service. She served as a director for the Barium Springs Home for Children, the United Way of Craven County, RCS, and the advisory board for NC Retired Governmental Employees Association.

Active in her Christian faith, Melba served often and willingly as a servant of her Lord at First Presbyterian Church of New bern, where she was an Elder, Chairwoman of the Administration Commission, Personnel Commission, Pulpit Nominating Committee, and the Christian Education Committee.

A celebration of her life will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church, 418 New St. New Bern, with Dr. William L. Hawkins officiating.
