Prominent Monroe Township Man Answers Final Summons
Was born the 10th of May 1852; His demise came last Sunday evening Feb. 25th at the late residence in Monroe township where he lived for more than 40 years. In 1878 he was united in marriage to Mina Porter who preceded him in his demise, 12 years ago last June. About 10 years ago he was united in marriage to Ida Allison who survives him. Practically all his life of more than three score years and ten has been spent in Monroe township. This continuity of residence in this community brought to him a wide circle of friends throughout the western part of Holmes county. Few men have merited or received more implicit confidence than that reposed in Harvey Allison. He was well known to be the very soul of honor. The appreciation is which he was held found its expression in offices of public trust, as an elder in the Christian church and the universal endearment to his friends and neighbors. Those who knew him best are a unit in the thought "that it would be difficult if not impossible to find a citizen who incarnated more of the virtues and fewer of the vices of men." His ideals and life were puretanic, he had an utter abhorrence of evil in every form. He had no vaulting ambition to amass a fortune, having enough he was content with being "rich toward God and to place his treasure where moth and rust doth not corrupt or thieves break through and steal." He fostered every enterprise for human uplift and especially was this true in his solicitude for the church of his communion and toward the ambassadors of Christ who came to him in the name of their Lord. Hundreds of people far and wide will remember his gracious hospitality. For forty years this home has been has been a benediction to the ministers of the gospel. "The Prophets chamber in the east room" was always ready for them. He had no interests aside from his home, his church and those that pertain to the state as a citizen, and today the neighbors mourn the loss of a most dependable friend. The church loses one of her strongest advocates and the state one of its most reliable citizens. The deceased was the eldest of a family of six children of the late Enoch and Rebecca Allison. Aside from his widow, Mrs. Ida Allison, he is survived by two sisters and two brothers, four step-children, Mrs. Cassie McDaniels of Glenmont, Ohio, Mrs. Esther Steinbring of Shreve, Ohio, Charles Phillips Allison of Cleveland, Ohio, and one sister Mrs. Sarah Patterson having preceded him in death. The step-children are: Mrs. Laura Close of Monroe township, Lloyd Allison of Monroe township; Benjamin Allison of Omaha, Neb., and Mrs. Mabel Smith of Cuyahoga Falls. While from the human standpoint it is impossible to give a correct estimate of any life, get these indices of character which are unmistakable, and it is right to give emphasis to these for the encouragement of the living as well as for our honored dead. But the correct full summary of every life can only be made by the all seeing, the all wise, who knoweth even the secret intents of the heart.
