Ula Burgees Hemingway

Alpine, Utah - Ula Burgess Hemingway (89) died (13 September 2014, American Fork, Utah).
Born 21 January 1925 in Alpine, Utah, Ula is the only daughter of Edward "W" Burgess and Inez Thurza Clark. She married Robert Downie Hemingway in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on 30 August 1948.
Ula attended Alpine Elementary and American Fork Jr. and American Fork High School where she graduated in 1943 with honors and was very active in sports. She was one of the speakers at her Seminary graduation in the Alpine Tabernacle and attended the LDS Business College.
She served as a missionary from 1946-47 in the Southern States Mission under Pres. Heber Meeks. She was Alpine Ward's 1st Golden Gleaner. She was active in Cubbing and Boy Scouting both in California and Utah, holding various positions for over 50 years including serving on the Troop Committee and as a Merit Badge Counselor. As an Eagle Scout Mentor she helped over 60 young men become an Eagle Scout and was a recipient of the Boy Scouts of Amercia's Silver Beaver.
She served 22 years in all levels of PTA, receiving two PTA awards: the Honorary Service Award and Continuing Service Award. She was also awarded the California Pro Family Circle award. She was active in community work. She served as Chairman of the Central California Eagle Forum, Association of the W's, Bakersfield Chapter Women's Press Club, along with numerous committee jobs for many many years. Ula was a Board Member of the Chamber of Commerce (Women's Division) and on the Kern County Republican Women board, 1st Vice President of the W.C.T.U. She volunteered in numerous community drives, including American Heart Fund & Cancer, Hospital and Veteran's work, election boards, precinct chairman both in California and Utah for a number of years. She chaired Kern County's National Family Week, Originator and general chairman of Kern County's "All American Contest" and program, organized and chaired Central California's Pro Family Educational Seminar in 1979 and again in 1980, and was selected as 1st runner-up in Kern County's "Woman of The Year".
She has been very involved in all phases of Patriotic work having been a delegate to numerous conventions. She is a Lifetime Member of the Daughters of American Revolution and in 1956 joined the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (Mountainville Camp) and has continued to serve in various positions including six years as Captain of Mountainville Camp. She served for many years as president of the Ladies Auliliary of the VFW. Ula loved their Alpine home and was active in preserving its heritage. Since 1983 she had been the general chairman of Alpine's Historic Pioneer Relic Hall. She chaired Alpines Patriotism Committee where Alpines 140th Anniversary was celebrated and a book was compiled. She designed Alpine Citys Flag and is proud of being a 5th generation Alpiner. She and her husband Bob designed and were responsibile for the Veterans Memorial at Alpine's Cemetery and the acquition and displaying of the American Flags along Alpines Main Street. In 1999 Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge recognized Ula and her husband as one of Utah's "Heroes" and received their Award. She was Alpines Sesquicentennial Chairman in 2000.
All her life she was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At age 12 she started teaching Primary. Ula served 18 years in Primary including 5 years as a chorister and in the presidency. For over 15 years she served in the MIA at both stake and ward levels and worked nearly 20 years in Relief Society. Ula also was a Provo Temple Ordinance worker for five years with her husband, and for a while substituted at the Mount Timpanogos Temple. As an avid genealogist, she compiled and published several historical books including many life histories of her ancestors and family. At the time of her passing she was a member of Mountainville 2nd Ward holding numerous callings.
*She is survived by her husband, Bob, and five children: Twenty-two grandchildren and Twenty-seven great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Ross and Van Burgess.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at 1:00 PM in the Mountainville Chapel (Main and 2nd North) Alpine, Utah.
A Family and Closed Casket Viewing will take place before the funeral on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM in the Mountainville Chapel.
Interment will be at the Alpine City Cemetery immediately following the chapel service.
