Death of Mrs. W.E. Taylor
“Mrs. Taylor, wife of Medical Director W.E. Taylor of the U. S. Navy, died at the Bernard House yesterday afternoon about 3 o’clock. Mrs. Taylor had been sick for almost two years, and was very low for the past few months. Her demise was the result of a complication of diseases. It was supposed that an internal tumor caused the chief troubles, but at the time of her death the affliction resembled typhoid fever more than anything else. During a long residence on Mare Island and in Vallejo she has made a large circle of friends who will mourn her untimely dissolution, and Dr. Taylor and daughter will have the sympathy of a large number of friends in this their hour of bereavement. Mrs. Taylor was a sister of Capt. John Irwin of the Navy Yard, who feels deeply the loss of one so dear to him. Mrs. Taylor was a native of Pittsburgh, Pa. She will be buried Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock from the Bernard House, and the body will be interred at the Masonic Cemetery.”
When Charlotte was about five years old her widowed father William Wallace Irwin married Sophia Arabella Bachelor great granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin. William left his three children from his first marriage, John, Frances and Charlotte, to be raised by their grandmother Agnes Irwin at her Erin Hill Estate in Pittsburgh.
Charlotte married Dr William E Taylor in 1863 at the Pittsburgh home of her sister Frances "Fanny" Mason Irwin Mustin and her husband James G Mustin. In 1876 Charlotte wrote a letter from Vallejo to her niece Caroline Mustin Nicholson in Pittsburgh congratulating her on the birth of Caroline's daughter and namesake Charlotte Taylor Nicholson. Charlotte sent $10 to Caroline and promised to send more.
In 1880 US Census Charlotte, Dr Wm E Taylor and daughter Grace were living in Vallejo, Solano, CA at the Bernard House.
Charlotte's sister in law Oceana Saint Irwin is buried in nearby Mare Island Cemetery.
