She was born on February 23, 1923, in Shenandoah, Va., and was the eldest daughter of the late John Jennings Meadows and Daisy Marie Rhodes Meadows. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Helvestine Ill.

Mary was a graduate of the Lewis-Gale School of Nursing, After spending six years in Cleveland, Ohio, Mary and her family moved back to Roanoke and she resumed her career as an emergency room nurse at Lewis-Gale Hospital which was then located in downtown Roanoke city. She was a gifted seamstress and spent much of her spare time making clothes for all of her immediate family members and her grandchildren. She was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church since 1961 and participated in the church choir for many years.

While Mary lead a very busy life, nothing was more important to her than her family. Sunday family dinners at her home were a weekly event. On holidays her house was barraged with her many family members and their pets.

The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel on Thursday from 4 to 6 pm. A memorial service and celebration of Mary's life will be held at St. John Lutheran Church on Friday, August 1, 2014, at 11 am. A luncheon will be provided at the church following the service for friends and family to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. John Lutheran Memorial Service, 4608 Brambleton Ave., SW, Roanoke, VA 24018; Bright Focus Foundation, Macular Degeneration Research Center, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20571; or the charity of your choice.
