Civil War Union Soldier. He was 19 years old and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when he was mustered in as a Private in Company I, 71st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on July 10, 1861. The regiment, known as the California Regiment, was part of the Philadelphia Brigade, which gained fame during the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg when it defended "The Angle" on Cemetery Hill during Picketts Charge on the third day of the engagement. He served with the regiment through three years of enlistment, then was transferred to Company C, 69th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on June 12, 1864. He was with the unit for less then a month, and was honorably mustered out on July 1, 1864 when his enlistment expired by law.
