Richard Nelson passed away on September 10, 2014. He was born on April 14, 1923 in McCall Creek, Mississippi to Minnie Bird Nelson and Andrew Nelson, Sr.

He graduated from Franklin High School in Brookhaven, MS and attended Alcorn State University. He honorably served in the United States Army during WWII.

He worked at Hill Air Force Base as an aircraft painting supervisor and retired after 33 years of service. He also worked as a barber at Clearfield Job Corps Center.

Richard was a member of the New Zion Baptist Church since 1953. He was a member of the pastor selection committee and a member of the choir. He was also a member of the popular gospel singing group The Utah Travelers.

He is survived by his children, Barbara (Dan) Harris, Kenneth (Sharon) Nelson, Orlando Nelson, Claude Nelson and special daughters: Glory (Calvin) Johnson-Stanton and Janice Johnson; brother, Warren “WC” Nelson; and special sister-in-law Mary Bell (Tommie) Tucker and special friend Mary Swain; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia, Julius Wayne Nelson and his 16 siblings.

Interment Layton Memorial Park, 1867 North Fairfield Road with military honors accorded.
