He served as a First Lieutenant for 3 months in 1861 in K Company, 3rd Regiment, Connecticut Infantry, and later as a Captain in C Company, 7th Regiment, Connecticut Infantry, in the Union Army during the Civil War. He filed for a pension in North Carolina November 4, 1890.
He moved to North Carolina immediately after the termination of the Civil War. He first engaged in the pressing of oil from fish on Core Sound.
He then moved to New Bern, NC, and engaged in the shipping business. He was an agent for the Clyde Line of steamers. He was made an agent for the Old Dominion Line when it combined with the Clyde Line. He was a large cotton buyer and latter established a wooden plate factory to which he added a pulp factory.
He served as President of the local Cotton and Grain Exchange for several terms.
