French Nobility. She was the only daughter of Robert II and his first wife Amicie de Courtenay. She married Othon IV de Chalon, Count Palatine of Burgundy in 1291 and gave birth to four children. The first two were Blanche and Jeanne de Bourgogne, the younger two Robert and Jean, did not survive their childhood. After the death of her father, in 1302 in the battle of Kortrijk, she inherited the county of Artois and a year later, after the death of her husband she also inherited parts of the palatine of Burgundy. Due to her intervention her daughter Jeanne was allowed to return to her husbands side in 1315. Mathilde held the young King John I during his christening who died soon after that. She was suspected to be responsible for his death, especially because Jeanne became queen due to his death. She founded several abbeys like the Charteuse de Gosnay and the Poor Clares in St-Omer.
