Milton Baron

Haslett

Milton Baron, a long time resident of Haslett, Michigan, Professor Emeritus of MSU, and a Fellow in the American Society of Landscape Architects passed away on Saturday, September 6th, at age 101.

He is survived by his loving wife Mary of almost 60 years; son Richard and his wife Nancy; grandchildren Carly and Michael; daughter Amy Villegas and her husband Daniel Villegas; and his sister Shirley Uman.

On May 16, 1913, Milton arrived as the first child of Etta and Herman Baron. As he grew in his hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts, he was grateful for the nature-garden school programs and the beautiful park environment that stimulated his future.

He graduated from Stockbridge School, Mass Agricultural College in Horticulture in 1934. His work in Landscape Forestry with the Springfield Parks Department focused his interest in land planning and design that led to his acceptance as a special student at Harvard Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

During the Great Depression, he was dependent on student loans, scholarships and self-help. He attended Boston University and concurrently completed his Harvard Design thesis. In early June 1939, he received his Bachelor's degree from Boston University and received his Master's degree in Landscape Architecture from Harvard two weeks later.

His professional experience included Stone and Webster Engineering, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the National Park Service. He served in the Army Air Force at Wright Field Air Service Command with Post Engineers, conducting hydroponics research for an overseas assignment when the war ended.

In 1946 he joined the Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science, later to become Michigan State University (MSU), as an Assistant Campus Landscape Architect and Assistant Professor. MSU had fewer than 5000 students when he joined, and when he retired in 1981 as the Director of Campus Parks and Planning, MSU had grown to over 51,000 students. He was involved in the land planning projects during the expansion of the University.

Throughout his retirement, he was an avid grower of orchids and remained actively interested in cultivating plant material and in landscape design.

A memorial service will be held at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 1924 Coolidge Road, East Lansing, Michigan 48823 on Sunday, September 7th at 2 PM. Immediately following the memorial service, a reception will be held at the Henry Center for Executive Development, 3535 Forest Road (next to the MSU University Club), Lansing, Michigan 48910 at the Four Seasons Lounge to remember and celebrate Milton's life with family and friends.

Donations may be made to MSU, for the Milton Baron Landscape Architecture Scholarship Fund, 535 Chestnut Street, Room 300, East Lansing, Michigan 48824-1005, or Congregation Shaarey Zedek, honoring Milton Baron, 1924 Coolidge Road, East Lansing, Michigan 48823.
