He was born Feb. 23, 1919, in Blue Island, Ill., the son of Charles and Louise (Neibert) Andersen. He worked for his family at Andersens Grocery Store in Blue Island, Ill. He later worked in Harvey, Ill, for the Wyman Gordon Steel Company at the Ingalls Shepard Division. He married Dorothy Hagen on Feb. 21, 1942, in Midlothian, Ill. He joined the U.S. Army on March 16, 1943. He served during World War II and was honored with the Victory medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, four Over Seas Service Bars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Meritorious Unit Award. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 22, 1945. Upon his discharge, he returned to work for the Wyman Gordon Steel Company. In 1960, Robert and Dorothy moved to Spider Lake and owned and operated Andersens Timber Ridge Resort. In 1967, they moved to Hayward and purchased Dows Corner Store. They operated the store for six years until 1973. Then they built Misty Meadow Cafe. While operating his business, Robert also worked at the Hayward Lumber and the Telemark Resort. He enjoyed woodworking. Among his many pieces, he created furniture, boats and things for the home. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayward and the V.F.W. post.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Roberta Bobi (Eric) Hopp of Hayward; a granddaughter, Nichole; a sister, Phyllis Koch of Hayward; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Charles, Jack and Alfred; and two sisters, Alice Gardner and Ester Andersen.
Funeral: Services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 24, at Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home in Hayward, with the Rev. Mark O. Wilson officiating.
Visitation: 10 to 11 a.m., Thursday, July 24, at Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home, Hayward.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Hayward, with military rites by the Hayward Veterans Council.
