Mr. Andrew Jackson "A.J." Strickland, Jr., 72 of Patterson, passed away early Wednesday morning, September 3, 2014, at his residence.

Born in Patterson, GA on February 7, 1942, he had lived in Lake Worth, Florida for many years before returning to Pierce County. Mr. Strickland was a 1960 graduate of Patterson High School where he lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track. Following his graduation from high school he went on to serve in the Georgia National Guard. Mr. Strickland was a building contractor, having learned his trade from his uncles while living in south Florida, and had also worked on his family farm. He served as a Pierce County Commissioner for several years and was a member of the Election Board of Satilla REMC.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He was also a founding member of the Satilla River Keepers. Mr. Strickland will be remembered as always having a smile on his face and being a friend to everyone.

He was a son of the late Andrew Jackson, Sr. & Isabelle Dixon Strickland. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Diane Raulerson Strickland; and by a brother-in-law, Ross Knowlton.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Shannon & Pat Bennett and Sherry & Jamie Bowen all of Blackshear and Stacia & Jason Fuller of Athens; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty Knowlton, Genevieve Pope and Angela Strickland all of Patterson and Patricia & Eddie Cox of Brunswick; a brother and sister-in-law, W. D. & Susan Strickland of Pattersonp; a brother-in-law, Clinton & Susan Raulerson of West Palm Beach, FL; 5 grandchildren, Carson Bennett, Patch Bennett, Drew Bowen, Dowl Bowen, and Talulah Fuller; and several nieces, nephews & other relatives.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 670 Main Street, Blackshear, GA 31516 or to Satilla Riverkeepers, PO Box 697, Woodbine, GA 31569.

Visitation for Mr. Strickland will be held two hours prior to the service at the church.

Funeral services for Mr. Strickland will be held Saturday afternoon, September 6, 2014, at 2:00 o'clock from the Blackshear First Baptist Church.

Interment will be in the Strickland Cemetery.
