Hubert de Burgh, 1st Earl of Kent, Justiciar of England, Constable of Dover Castle, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports

Son of Walter Cli Rayner De Burgh 1133-1179 and younger brother of William de Burgh d 1206.

Hubert had four wives:
* Joan, the daughter of William, Earl of Devon
* Beatrice de Warenne, daughter of William de Warenne d c 1208
* Isabella, daughter and heir to William FitzRobert m 1217
* Margaret, sister to Alexander II of Scotland

Hubert had three children:
* John, son of Beatrice
* Hubert
* Margaret, daughter of Margaret m Richard de Clare

Hubert began his life long career as a minor official in King John Lackland's household, and rise steadily through out his life, given charge of Chinon Castle in 1204 to made Justiciar for life in 1228.

In 1206, Hubert bought the parish of Tunstall, Kent from Robert de Arsic.

Hubert remained loyal to King John during the rebellion, and is listed as one of the men who advised John to sign the Magna Carta. Hubert headed the English forces in the Battle of Sandwich, heading off the French Fleet off the coast of Sandwich in 1217, resulting in the beheading of Eustace the Monk on the spot of victory.

He remained loyal to Henry III, who made Hubert the lord of Montgomery Castle and Earl of Kent. Hubert married his daughter to Richard de Clare before the groom was an adult and still a ward of the king, creating a small amount of trouble with the king, but the marriage ended in annulment, and Tunstall was inherited by her son, John de Burgo.

Hubert was the son of Walter be Burgh, and the younger brother of William de Burgh. He was born circa 1160, and died before May of 1243. Hubert was betrothed to Joan de Revers, the daughter of William, Earl of Devon, but the marriage never took place.

Hubert had three wives and two children:
* Beatrice de Warenne d 1214, daughter of William de Warenne. Their son was Sir John de Burgh who died about 1274 without issue
* Isabella de Clare 1176-1217, daughter of William, Earl of Gloucester
* Margaret 1193-1259, sister of Alexander II of Scotland, their child was Margaret who married Richard de Clare and died 1237 without issue

Hubert was first the chamberlain for King John, then Constable of Dover Castle, controller of Falaise, Normandy, appointed Warden of the Cinque Ports, and given the charge of Chinon Castle. Henry III made him lord of Montgomery Castle and Earl of Kent and Justiciar for life. Hubert remained loyal to King John during the Barons War. Hubert was sent to subdue the French fleet at Sandwich in 1217, the confrontation was the Battle of Sandwich when the commander, Eustace the Monk, was executed.

In 1232 his enemies finally succeeded in having him removed from office and imprisoned. He escaped from Devizes Castle to join Richard Marshal, the son of William and 3rd Earl of Pembroke, in rebellion.

Hubert bought the parish of Tunstall from Robert de Arsic in 1206. His daughter, Margaret, was married to Richard de Clare, the Earl of Gloucester, without royal license and when Richard was a minor, the marriage annulled before she died in 1260 and Hubert's grandson, John de Burgo, inherited the parish.

Hubert was accused of poisoning William Marshall, but there was no proof to retain the charges.

Hubert died in Banstead and was buried in the Church of the Friars Preachers, Holborn May 12th.
