J.S. Hughes, of the state superintendent of school’s office, who has been ill with pneumonia for several days, is reported very low today. He had been in a stupor all the morning and the doctor held out little hope of his recovery.

James S. Hughes Dead


James S. Hughes, formerly connected with the state department of public instruction, died last evening, heart failure being the immediate cause of his death. Mr. Hughes was a member of Company K, Second Minnesota volunteers, and after the war was a compositor on the St. Paul Press, and afterwards did editorial work on the Globe. He was a member of Garfield post, G.A.R. and his funeral, the data which will be announced later, will be held under Grand Army auspices. He is survived by a wife and one son, who reside at 330 Igleheart Street. The family has the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their affliction.

AN OLD SETTLER GONE JAMES S. HUGHES, ONE OF ST. PAUL’S PIONEERS, DIES LAST EVENING FUNERAL SUNDAY
James S. Hughes, lately connected with the office of the superintendent of public instruction, died last evening of heart failure, super induced by an attack of pneumonia. Mr. Hughes was a member of Company K, Second Minnesota, and made a good record as a solider. After the war he engaged in newspaper business for several years. The funeral will take place from the family residence Sunday afternoon at 2:30, under the auspices of Garfield post G.A.R. Rev. Catheters, of the Unitarian church officiating. Mr. Hughes was about 50 years of age and came to this city in 1850 with his father who started the Minnesota Chronicle here that year. His grandfather, Prof Mather, made a geological survey of this state in the early forties. Mr. Hughes had hundreds of warm friends in the city who mourn his loss. He was an inveterate worker and a close student, and overwork aided disease in bringing about his death.
