Val June Schafer, 88 years old, residing in Lakeville, IN passed away at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 14, 1926 in Whitley County, IN to the late Clinton and Ann (Rathbun) Hathaway. At the age of 8, Val June was adopted by the late Charles and Nellie (Bollenbacher) Birk. On March 29, 1947 in Wakarusa, IN she was united in marriage to Roy E. Schafer who preceded her in death on January 21, 1999. Val June was also preceded in death by her son, Craig Schafer on March 22, 2002; her daughter, Kathy Courier on January 10, 2006; and four sisters and seven brothers.

Val June is survived by her four granddaughters; Wendi (Steve) Goetz of Huntington, IN, Jodi (Jon) Hartman of Fort Wayne, IN, Tricia (Shawn Markin) Mears of South Bend, IN and Stephanie (Eric) Nelson of Osceola, IN; twelve great grandchildren, Matthew, Nathaniel, Zachary, Austin, Kylie, Ella, Amelia, Emma, Olivia, Dennilyn, Shawn Collin, and Christian; brother, David Hathaway of Lakeville, IN; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Val June was a lifelong resident of Lakeville, IN. She was the valedictorian for the 1944 graduating class at Madison Township High School. She worked twenty-two years at Wilson Coal & Grain and thirty years at Country Gardens at the grocery store, meat department, and garden center. She worked five years at Rare and Unusual in Plymouth, IN and was currently working at Lowe's Garden Center in Plymouth, IN. Val June was a long time member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church. She served as a Union Township 4-H leader for fifty years, serving twelve years as a 4-H board member, secretary for three years, booster treasurer for seventeen years and served on the 4-H Scholarship Trust Fund Committee. She also served as the 4-H County Garden Superintendant for twenty years. She was the Gleaner Centre Township Arbor President for ten years, Farm Bureau Township Director for eight years and Director of Porter Rae Cemetery for eight years. Val June was a fifteen year member of the Lakeville Lions Club, member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 479, Lakeville, where she served as Past Matron in 1978-1979 and the secretary from 2006-2012. She was also a member and past treasurer of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at the Esther Singer Building, St. Joseph County 4-H Fairgrounds, 5117 S. Ironwood Road, South Bend, IN. Pastor Sue Irwin and Pastor Michael Jenkins will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Porter Rae Cemetery, North Liberty, IN. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3rd at the Esther Singer Building, St. Joseph County 4-H Fairgrounds and one hour prior to the services. Palmer Funeral Home is assisting with funeral arrangements. The family realizes the times for the visitation and service may not accommodate everyone’s schedules but these times and days were selected due to the availability of the St. Joseph County 4-H Fairgrounds and the building Val June had selected.
