My grandfather Giulio was the adopted son of Arcangelo Pelizzer and Celeste Strada of Castel Franco. He was adopted in 1906.

Giulio was born in Venice, Italy and was raised and educated by nuns until the age of 15, at Instituto Pieta di Venezia (Santa Maria della Pieta), an orphange in Venice. He was called a "foundling". The nuns gave him his surname Loroscopi, which translates to 'The Horoscope'. His first name was given by his biological parents.

His birth father was, according to family history, a man named --- Venier of Florence; related to the branch of the Venier family of Venice. His mother's identity is unknown but he was told she had beautiful, long auburn hair. He knew of his birth father but never wanted to contact him, even though he was told by many people it would've been to his advantage to do so. He felt those who had adopted him were his true parents.

According to correspondence with the Mayor of Venice (c. 2000), Giulio's birth father paid for his education until he left Venice at the age of 15 to live permanently with his adopted parents in St. Stino di Livenza.

My grandfather worked as a railroad guard during WWII, authorizing the trains that went through the town of Vicenza. During the war, he saw German supply trains go through with the belongings of those sent to concentration camps.

He was a wonderful gardener and helped to feed many families in Vicenza during the war, when supplies for food were very low.

He loved American cinema, especially westerns.

My grandfather passed away in Vicenza, Italy, a few days after surgery for stomach cancer. He was advised by the doctor to only take in liquids a few weeks before his surgery and was too weak to recover.

I never met my grandfather. He passed away before I was born. I know him through my mother's memories. The family home in Vicenza still stands today and the railroad tracks still run behind it.
