William served twice during the Civil war, Once as a Lt.and another as a Pvt. with his two brothers Captain Gainum Brightwell (Named on memorial at Batesville AK. http://www.civilwarbuff.org/Places/Independence/CourtHouse2.htm) and Pvt. Elgin Brightwell and his nephew Sgt. James L. Brightwell.

I was mostly wanting to share this information because I Don't see all of his children listed, but thought I would also share the other information I have uncovered.
