Howard S. Alpaugh was the son of Wesley and Elizabeth Emery Alpaugh. All 3 of them were born in Clinton, NJ. He was born on the Alpaugh homesstead south of Clinton.

He worked as a bookkeeper and shipping clerk for E.S. Alpaugh & Co. (commission merchants).

In 1879, he married Julia Varick and in 1881, they had a son, Howard S. Alpaugh Jr. She died in 1881.

He then married Isabella Bird in 1883 and had two more children, Meta B. Alpaugh, born in 1885, and Wesley Frace Alpaugh, born in 1888.

He joined the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church on Dec 12, 1897 and was ordained an Elder on Nov 16, 1902. He served as an Elder until he died.

Howard died in 1920 following surgery for appendicitis. He was buried at Grandin, NJ. His son, France Alpaugh of Clinton, NJ was the informant on his NJ death certificate. His obituary was published in the Clinton Democrat on April 1, 1920.
