Russell "Russ" James Schindler, 83 of Le Center, died Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Sunrise Cottage of Mankato. Visitation was held from 4–8 p.m. Sunday, June 26 at Le Center Funeral Home. Funeral Services were at 10 a.m. Monday, June 27 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Le Center. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery in Le Center with Military Honors provided by the Le Center Area Veterans.

Russ was born on September 5, 1927 in Le Center to John and Mabel (Whipps) Schindler. He graduated from McKinley High School in Le Center in 1947 and Practical Trade Institute of Minneapolis in 1948. Russ entered the United States Army in 1948 and served until 1952.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy "Dotsy" Kilduff on June 16, 1951 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in rural Le Sueur County. Upon returning home from the service, Russ operated Parkway Service in Le Center with his brother. After the service was sold, he managed the Le Center Liquor Store for 28 years.

Russ was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and was past Fire Chief of the Le Center Fire Department. He enjoyed working on old cars and "tinkering". Russ was a resident for his last 10 years at Sunrise Cottages in Mankato.

He is survived by his wife, Dotsy of Le Center; five children: Stephanie and Richard Cauley of Mankato, Thomas and Denise Schindler of Le Center, Jayne and Tim Kelly of Le Center, Robert and Tammy Schindler of Mankato and Jeffrey and Carolyn Schindler of Lakeville; 11 grandchildren: Shawn, Nicholas, Kristopher, John, Courtney, Lauryn, Megan, Carly, Jacob, Maddie and Ryan; great granddaughter, Harper Cauley; sister-in-law, Rosie Schindler of LadySmith, Wis.

Russ is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Donna Moravec and Barbara Thilgen; brother, John Schindler; and grandchildren, Rachel and David Schindler.

Russell will be remembered for his ability to fix "just about anything" and his enormous patience while doing so. He loved his family and particularly his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them and giving a little teasing along the way. He was a kind and gentle man with a big heart and a friend to many.
