Gabe was born in New Jersey and moved to San Francisco in 1925 with her parents, Richard and Hedwig Detert, and her brother, Gunther Detert. There she attended the Katherine Delmar Burke School and then the University of California, Berkeley. Gabe studied art at UC Berkeley and was a talented artist who enjoyed capturing the beauty of the natural world, especially wildflowers, in her paintings.
In 1941 Gabe married Allen Horton. They raised three daughters and shared 56 wonderful years together before Allen's death in 1997, living in San Francisco and then moving to their country home in the Napa Valley after Allen's retirement. They were an inspirational couple, very much in love and devoted to each other for all the years of their marriage.
Gabe had a great love of life and was an incredibly special woman, always positive in her outlook and full of love and kindness for those around her. She touched many people in her life and will continue to live in their hearts.
Gabe is survived by her daughters, Pamela Horton, Gabriela Hopf, and Caroline MacDonald. She is also survived by her son-in-law Georg Hopf and by her grandsons, Graeme MacDonald and Alex MacDonald.
A private family service will be held in the Napa Valley.
