James Edward "Mike" Anderson, of Petal, MS passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at Merit Health Wesley Medical Center, at the age of 93. He was born April 29, 1925 in Hattiesburg, MS, and graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 1942. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class, during WW II. He worked for a time in submarine repair in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and served in the Pacific on an escort ship named the U.S.S. Register. When the ship was in war cruising, he was in charge of the number one engine room. In August of 1945, his escort ship rescued at least 13 sailors who survived the sinking of the cruiser known as the U.S.S. Indianapolis.
He worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for over 40 years, owned and operated Petal Electric Company as a licensed electrician, and he constructed swimming pools on the side. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed horseback riding. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was a faithful Christian, served as a deacon, and sung in the choir when he was able. Also, he held the deepest respect for Rev. Leland Hogan, Dr. Ben Skipper, and Rev. Wendell Frazier. He and his wife are current members of Carterville Baptist Church of Petal, MS.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Gibson Anderson and Ida Arledge Anderson of Hattiesburg; two sisters; Eleanor Almand and Emily Anderson and one brother; Robert "Pat" Anderson.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Elizabeth Geane Wallace Anderson, of Petal, MS.; three daughters, Becky Louk, and her husband, John, of Petal; Ellie Lott, and her husband, Mike, of Petal; and Millie Moore, and her husband, Roy, of Monroe, LA.; six grandchildren, Jennifer Langnes, and her husband, Jason, of Petal; Craig Bullock, and his wife, Mandy, of Petal; Ryan Lott, and his wife, Jennifer, of Madison; Bryan Moore, and his wife, Meg, of Ruston, LA.; Emily Cade, and her husband, Tanner, of Hattiesburg; and Bethany Morris, and her husband, Kody, of Van Buren, AR. Also, he is survived by 14 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 2, 2019, from 9 a.m. until the beginning of the service, at the Moore Funeral Home in Petal, MS. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., with Dr. Ben Skipper and Rev. Wendell Frazier officiating. Interment will be at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Petal.
Memorials may be made to the Carterville Baptist Church, of Petal, MS.
The family also wish to thank the Medical Staff and Personnel, of the Methodist Hospital in Hattiesburg, for their compassionate care and faithful service.
