James was born June 6, 1822 in St. Bride Parish on Fleet Street in London, England. He moved with his parents about 1826/27 to Newtyle, Angus Shire and about 1828 to Tynrich, Logierait, Parish Perth Shire. Here he learned the trade of a shoe maker under the watchful eye of his Father, also a shoemaker. He ran a shoe shop at Tynrich until he emigrated to the Americas in 1852.

James married Elizabeth "Betsy" Saunders October 17, 1854 in Hamilton, Ontario and after marriage, they moved to Illinois, USA to a farm just south of present day Seaton. In 1870 they sold this land and moved to a farm they had purchased near Little York, Illinois in Sumner Twp. Here they farmed the rest of their active years and lived out their lives on this farm where James died on July 2, 1903 and is buried in Candor Cemetery near Seaton, Illinois.
