A large and loving family, hundreds of loving and respecting friends of the late John Gray Bynum Sparks gathered outside the First Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 31, to pay honor and homage to the memory of the truly pioneer citizen of Hansford Country, who spent 48 years of his life, living the county with the people he loved so dearly.
Rev. R.S. Watkins, pastor of the Spearman First United Methodist Church, pronounced the funeral prayer and read the Scripture of the 23rd Psalm. The choir sang two songs, favorites of the deceased; "Sweet Hour of Prayer" and "Rock of Ages." The funeral oration was read by a lifelong friend of the family, Rev. H.A. Nicols, former pastor of the First United Methodist Church, now pastor of the FUMC at Stratford, Texas.
In point of years of service to his county and years of pleasant, cheerful association with his host of friends, perhaps John Gray could be classified as one of the first three pioneer citizens of this county. He came here to make his home in in 1901. He made that home and reared a family of respectable citizens, many of whom still remain in the county to take their places amoung the citizens who are making Hansford County a fine place in which to live.
Mr. Sparks, a retired farmer-stockman at the time of his death, has done perhaps as much as any other individual toward the upbuilding and orderly progress of Spearman and Hansford County. He served Precinct No. 1 as commissioner for 16 years and it can be truthfully said that he worked for his people and for his county beyond the call of duty. He was a guiding spirit and a practical help in the planning and construction of the present modern Court House in Spearman. His vision and his work beyond the call of duty laid the groundwork for the present good roads throughout the county and more especially, in his home precinct. He was ever helpful and willing in planning improvements in the schools and civic enterprise of his home and county.

He married Miss Mary Elizabeth Douglass in 1890. To this union were born twelve children, two of whom preceeded him in death October 19, 1915.
Mr. Sparks came to Hansford County in 1901. He served as commissioner of Precinct No. 1 for sixteen years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He united with the Church of Christ in early manhood.
At the time of his death, he was living with his two daughters, Miss Cora Sparks and Miss Mary Sparks in Spearman. He passed to his reward August 30, 1949 at 12:15 A.M.
He is survived by his ten children: Mrs. J.W. (Tabitha) Burges, Miss Cora Sparks, Mr. Leonard Sparks, Miss Mary Sparks, Mr. Barney Sparks, Mr. Burnie Sparks of Gruver, Mrs. Kiff (Ailene) White, Mr. Raymond Sparks, Mrs. Johnnie (Fannie) Venneman all of Spearman, Texas unless otherwise noted and Mr. Willoughby Sparks of Amarillo.
