Ruth Johnson, 83, a West Brighton resident and retired cook, died yesterday from complications caused by emphysema at Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born Ruth Womack in Flat River, Missouri, Mrs. Johnson moved to New Brighton in 1943 and settled in West Brighton in 1967.
From 1943 to 1951, she worked on the assembly line at U.S. Gypsum Co, New Brighton. From 1951 until her retirement in 1968, she worked as a cook at Mariners Family Home, Stapleton.
Mrs. Johnson was a form lieutenant in the Sea Cadets and enjoyed crocheting, reading and baseball in her spare time.
Her husband, John, died in 1985.
Surviving are her son, Emmett Roby; two daughters, Norma Eisler and Catherine Smith; 16 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at noon at Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
