Death Removes Dr. J.P. Sargent
Community Shocked To Learn of Generous-Hearted Lodian's Demise
The many friends of Dr. .P. Sargent were shocked to hear of his death which occurred in San Francisco Tuesday morning at 8:30 o'clock. Only a half hour before a message was received here that he was very much improved. He gad been in poor health for many months and had recently gone to a hospital in San Francisco for special treatment.
Had Dr Sargent lived until yesterday, he would have celebrated his fifty-eighth birthday, having been born in San Joaquin county June 8, 1863, the oldest son of the late R.C.Sargent.Dr. Jacob Preston Sargent attended school in the Woodbridge section until the age of 14 years. He attended St. Matthew's Hall at San Mateo for three years ad then two years in a private institution in the Napa valley. Later he attended medical lectures at the Cooper Medical College in New York in 1886, following which he practiced there in the out-door department of the college. Returning to California, he practiced in San Francisco, and upon the death of his father, R.C. Sargent, in 1902, retired from professional life and devoted himself to the business management of the estate which is now estimated by business men to be worth $350,000.
Dr. Sargent was a generous, enterprising, whole-souled man, was most popular with those who knew him best, and a host of friends mourn his death. Public-spirited, he was ever active in advancing the interest of his home section, Woodbridge, Lodi and Stockton. During the war he gave liberally of his time and money in the various drives and participated in the work of the Red Cross, Y. M. C. A. and other campaigns, particularly throughout northern San Joaquin. He was one of the first contributors in the present Salvation Army drive, and recently, upon learning that the quota had not as yet been secured, gave an additional sum as he lay bedridden at the hospital.
Dr Sargent was a keen business man. He was president of the Stockton and Mokelumne Canal Company. His fraternal affiliation was with Stockton Lodge of Elks, and he was a member of the Yosemite Club of Stockotn and the Moquelumne Club of Lodi.
Word of his death was received this morning by Attorney Arthur L. Levinsky of Stockton, a close friend of many year's standing and the legal adviser of the deceased in his extensive operations. Mr. Levinsky conveyed the sad news to the home ranch and to the Moquelumne Club of Lodi.
Left to mourn his death are the bereaved widow, Mrs. Bettie Sargent, to whom he was married November 14, 1899, at that time Miss Bettie Falk of New York, and Mrs. Frederic N. Vail, a sister.
The funeral, which was private, was held this morning in San Francisco.
