A kind, gentle and loving soul, she and her late husband, Dr. Robert T. Hollingsworth provided health care services to Shelby residents for 55 years.
Miss Kate's journey began in Hillsboro, Ala., where at the age of 12, she was called to become a nurse. Her pursuit of nursing education was postponed when she volunteered to support the US during WWII. For three years she managed personnel records for the Commandant of the Coast Guard in Washington, D.C. eventually transferring to Mobile, Ala. Following service to her country, she worked for physicians and saved for her education. While studying nursing, Kate developed a desire to teach others the profession. She moved to Memphis for additional education and met and married Bob Hollingsworth, a physician in residence.
Until their move in 2005 to be closer to family in Atlanta, the two were inseparable and of a single mind in ministering to the needs of the citizens of Shelby and the larger Mississippi River Delta community. Miss Kate was instrumental in reopening the shuttered Shelby Community Hospital. She was the administrator and 24/7 Registered Nurse for many decades. She inspired and supported countless others in their pursuit of education to become nurses and physicians.
During Kathryn's final months she received continuous, untiring love and care from her sister Shirley Laney of Decatur, Ala., and her daughter Anna Kathryn Smith, RN, MPH, L Ac of San Diego, Calif.
She is survived by her daughter and son Holly Hollingsworth who lives in Smyrna, Ga., granddaughter Katelyn Hollingsworth of Decatur, Ga., her sisters Shirley, Bobbie Harville of Corpus Christi, Texas, Evelyn Graham of Laverne, Tenn., and her brother Gordon McBride of Decatur, Ala.
Miss Kate's legacy continues through nursing and pre-med scholarships by the Dr. R.T. and Kathryn Hollingsworth Endowment through Delta State University Alumni Foundation, DSU Box 3141, Cleveland, MS 38733, and www.deltastategiving.org.
