"The saddest hour in this life is when we come to say the last farewell to one who has become enshrined in our hearts because of their manifold goodness and usefulness and the intimate association they have with us in all that is good and ennobling; and the anguish at such a parting is too sorrowful for portrayal. Such were the emotions of the host of admirers and friends of Rev. Samuel M. Adams when it was learned last Thursday evening that the sands in the hour glass of his useful life had run their final course, and the spirit of this good man had gone to its heavenly home. Dr. Adams had been ill for some time but it was only recently that his friends became apprehensive of serious results. A kidney affliction developed into dropsy and complications arose that indicated that death was soon to entertain another guest. Loving hands and kindly hearts endeavored in every way to smooth the pathway to the inevitable grave, while skilled physicians did everything in their power to procure a new lease of life for the beloved man. But alas, the debt that all nature owes was due and no effort could avert it. Like a child passing to sleep at its mother's breast, so gently did this beloved brother fall asleep in the arms of his Savior. The evening shades had but fallen July 2nd when his spirit took its flight at his home in Walton where he resided many years. In every walk of life Dr. Adams met the full measure of his friends fondest hopes. He was a Christian of the purest type, and being possessed of a most lovable, genial disposition, coupled with all the highest principles of a well bred gentleman his life became, a blessing to mankind, and the sunshine of his benign influence was felt wherever he came, and the example of his useful life remains with us as a treasured memory, and in every way worthy of emulation. He was kind and generous to all, charitable and forgiving to those who erred, and his encouraging word of approval came to all who endeavored to live in obedience to the divine command. With the closing of such a life can it be otherwise than we should say farewell with tearful eyes and heavy hearts, and the sorrow would be unbearable to the loved ones left behind if it were not for the knowledge that it is only a little while until there will be joyful reunion on the celestial shore where all of the perplexities and sorrows of this wearisome life are forever laid aside, and peace eternal takes their place. Then farewell dear brother till we meet on that eternal shore. Dr. Adams was born at Big Bone Springs, Boone County, Ky., Sept. 30th, 1851, and his 57 years was spent in this immediate locality, each year accentuating his nearness to the people and installing him deeper in their affections. He united with the Big Bone Baptist church, Friday, Nov. 24th, 1882; was baptized at Hamilton the following day by Rev. James A. Kirtley, and was ordained to the full work of the gospel ministry at the Big Bone church July 26th, 1889, since which time he has been actively engaged in the Master's work, giving up a fine medical practice so as to devote his full time to the ministry. Dr. Adams was united in marriage to Miss Mary Elliston, June 18th, 1878 by Rev. Lafe Johnson, and their union was blessed with six children, all of whom with the exception of Georgia, who died at the age of seven years, survive the beloved husband and father, the surviving children being John G. Adams, Mrs. Julia Rouse, Kirtley D., C. Pressly, and Bluford W. Adams. To the bereaved widow and children a sorrowing community tender their heartfelt sympathy. The funeral took place Saturday, July 4th, at 11 o'clock a.m., at the Big Bone Baptist church, there being an immense gathering of sorrowing friends present to pay their last sad tribute to the memory of this good man. The services were conducted by Rev. Wm. McMillan, of the Baptist church, assisted by Rev. S.H. Pollitt, of the Methodist church, Rev. D.T. Buck of the Christian church, Rev. J.B. Harris, Rev. Miller and Rev. C.A. Bly. The pallbearers were: Honorary Wm. Houston, Dr. D.M. Bagby, G. Mosby Allen, Joseph Violette and Ira Bird, of Crittenden, and William Griffith of Beaver Lick; Active:- Geo. W. Sleet, Rev. D.T. Buck, Chas L. Griffith, J.W. Conner, Samuel Adams and George Taylor, of Hickory Grove. --D.B. Wallace"
