Aberdeen - Mass of Christian Burial for Veronica M. Goebel, 93, of Aberdeen will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2006, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Aberdeen. Burial will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery, Faulkton, S.D. Father Gregory Tschakert will officiate. Schriver's Memorial Mortuary & Crematory, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements. A Liturgical Wake Service will be 7 p.m., Friday, March 3, 2006, at the mortuary. Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Friday at the mortuary and one hour prior to the service at the church, Saturday. Veronica passed away Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor. Veronica M. Goebel was born Sept. 15, 1912, to Anton H. and Linda O. (Wegner) Goebel at West Point, Neb. At a young age, she moved with her family to Polo, S.D., and attended St. Mary's Parochial School at Zell and also St. Liborius Parochial School from which she graduated from the 8th grade in 1927. Veronica attended Notre Dame High School at Mitchell and graduated from Miller High School in 1931. Veronica enrolled in the Registered Nursing Program at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre, S.D. Veronica graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1935, and was first employed with Faulk County Hospital in Faulkton as a General Duty Nurse for a short time. Veronica moved to Aberdeen Aug. 1, 1939, and was employed with St. Luke's Hospital as a Night Supervisor. During WW II, Veronica was a Registered Red Cross Nurse. She never did active duty as St. Luke's Hospital had a Cadet Program in force and her position was frozen at that time. In 1946, Veronica returned to Faulkton and was the Hospital Administrator from 1946-1951. Veronica returned to Aberdeen and became the first Director of Nursing Service at St. Luke's Hospital. In August of 1962, Veronica returned to Faulkton and continued her employment as the Faulk County Hospital Administrator until May of 1968. Veronica again returned to Aberdeen, and was the Head Nurse for the Surgical Unit at St. Luke's Hospital for 10 years. Veronica retired in July of 1978. She kept her Nursing License current and remained very active in the nursing profession volunteering her time for many years. Veronica was a volunteer for Blood Pressure Clinics and the Lifeline Program for many years. Veronica served as President and a member of: The American Nurses Association, The South Dakota Nurses Association, South Dakota Heart Association, National Heart Association, South Dakota Cancer Association, South Dakota Hospital Association, Lamps Group of St. Luke's which is 25 years of service, The Retiree Group of St. Luke's Hospital, Senior Citizens, RSVP, she was a member of Catholic Daughters of Americas, St. Monicas Court in Faulkton and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Aberdeen for many years. In 1995, Veronica was recognized and honored from the South Dakota Association of Hospital Auxiliaries for 40 years of volunteer services to the hospital and to the community. Surviving Veronica are three nephews, Jim Goebel of Faulkton, S.D., Mike (Maria) Biddle of Corpus Christi, Texas, and David (Lorraine) Biddle of Midlothian, Va.; three nieces, Mary (Jim) Sandness of Woonsocket, S.D., Agnes Goebel of Huron, S.D., and Linda VanDerVeur of Woonsocket, S.D.; several great-nieces, nephews and several great-great-nieces and nephews. Veronica was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
