Mr. James Malcolm Burns, age 88, of Highland Ave, Rome, GA, passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2014 in a local hospital. As a loving father, grandfather, and friend he will be greatly missed.
James was born December 7, 1925, in Gordon County, Georgia. He was the son of the late Jether William Burns and Bonnie Fuller Burns. Survivors include a son, James M. "Jamie" Burns, Jr. of Dacula, GA; three grandchildren, Trey Burns, Allison Burns and Matthew Burns all formerly of Dacula; a brother, Kenneth Clifford Burns of Marietta, GA and a sister, Hazel Ables of Rosedale, GA. Additionally, he is survived by a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2008, the former Jane Carolyn Bagley, whom he married on October 7, 1950, and two brothers, J.W. Burns and Buren L. Burns.
In April of 1943 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served his country in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was injured in combat by shell fragments during the battle of Okinawa, and was evacuated and hospitalized, during which time the war ended. He received a Purple Heart and an honorable discharge. He re-enlisted and served one year during the Korean War, stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. He began his career with Southern Bell in 1946 as a cable splicer. He continued to work and train, eventually reaching the position of outside plant engineer. He retired in 1981 after 35 years of service to BellSouth (formerly Southern Bell). After retirement he continued consulting and contract work until his 70's. James was an avid gardener, who would grow and give away plants to friends and neighbors every year. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and volunteered his time at the Rome/Floyd County Library repairing talking book machines. He was a member of the Marine Corps League (Jake Puryear Chapter) and supported the Toys for Tots Program. He was a long-time member of Second Avenue United Methodist Church. Earlier, he was a supporter of East Rome High School, where he was a member and officer of both The Band Boosters Club and Gladiator Club. He was instrumental in the establishment of the annual Peach State Marching Festival.
The family received friends at the funeral home on Thursday, August 21, 2014, from 6 PM until 9 PM.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at 11 AM in the Second Avenue United Methodist Church with the Rev. Beth Sanders and the Rev. Dan Crawford officiating. Interment will follow in the East View Cemetery with Shanklin-Attaway Honor Guard of the American Legion Post 5, in charge of graveside honors. Members of the Marine Corps League will serve as pallbearers.
