William H. Barnes, 82, retired Rockford realtor, died Friday in Rockford Memorial hospital.
Mr. Barnes, a charter member of the Rockford REal Estate board, became ill early this week, and had been in the hospital since Wednesday. He had been retired since 1948.

For more than 50 years, Mr. Barnes was associated with the late C.H. Knapp in real estate with offices since 1896 in the Rockford Trust building.Wil

During his lifetime, he sold three of the corners of State and Main st.

He also brought for Ed Sumner the downtown real estate holdings in that family. During his active years, he handled many of the loop realty sales. He also developed Hillcrest subdivision, of which Garfield ave. is a part.
Mr. Barnes devoted a year to buying and getting title for the U.S. government to properties acquired to create Camp Grant during world war 1.

Mr. and Mrs. Barnes celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary May 24. On their 60th anniversary in 1954, they were honored.

Both were 21 years old when they married on May 24, 1894.

For many years Mr. Barnes was a director of the old Rockford hospital, now Rockford Memorial hospital, and chairman of its buildings and grounds committee.

He was born in Schuyler county, New York, Dec. 5, 1873, and came to Rockford as a young man.

He helped organize the Rockford Real Estate board 46 years ago. His son, William H. Barnes, Jr., is a past president.

He was a member of Second Congregational church, Rockford Mid-Day club and Masonic organizations.

He formerly belonged to Rockford Country club.

Since retirement, he had been an honorary member of Rockford Real Estate board.

Surviving are his widow, Lucretia Franklin Barnes, member of a prominent pioneer family which homesteaded in Burritt township; and five children, Theodore Barnes, Chicago; Mrs. Laura Redway, Syracuse, N.Y.; William H. Barnes, Jr., lawyer-realtor, Rockford; Mrs. Helen Dickinson, East Lansing, Mich.; and Charles E. Barnes, realtor, Rockford. Mrs. Ida Hawks, Prosser, Wash., is a sister.

A son, Franklin H. Barnes, died a year ago in Seattle, Wash., and a daughter, Marion, died in infancy.

There are 11 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ruth D. Clark, Rockford, is a niece, and Rowland Dryhurst, Rockford, a nephew.
