Bangor - Freda Ardelle (Basford) Wright, RN, 51, of Bangor, wife of the late Travis Wright, joined her loved ones April 14, 2008, at the feet of her Lord and Savior, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born July 20, 1956, in Belfast, the third child of Fred and Clara Basford.
The family moved to the home that her father built in Stockton Springs on her first birthday, which was the town's 100th birthday. She attended Stockton Springs Elementary School and Searsport District High School.
Freda's first encounter with the medical profession was as a dietary aide at Waldo County General Hospital. A close high school friend, Debbie Middleswart invited her to Arizona, where she met and married her soul mate, Travis Wright, who predeceased her.
After Travis' death, Freda followed in her mother's footsteps, obtaining her registered nurses license in 1990 from Pima Community College. She worked her way through school as a psyche tech at Pela Verde Hospital, Tucson, Ariz. Upon graduation she was hired into the cardio-pulmonary unit at Tucson Medical Center, were she made many lifetime friends.
Eventually Freda returned to Maine, where she continued her nursing specialty at St. Joseph Hospital in the cardiac unit until her diagnosis of colon cancer in May 2000.
After this experience, Freda dedicated her life to the care and love of cancer patients at Grant 6 East of Eastern Maine Medical Center. She was passionate about the Relay for Life and served as team co-captain from 2000 until 2007. Prior to commencing her nursing training, Freda studied briefly at Eastern Maine Vocational Technical Institute, Bangor, in the culinary arts program. Although she did not finish the program, it sparked a lifetime practice of serving others as many of her co-workers shared with family members during her most recent hospitalization.
Her health issues prevented her from carrying out her nursing career during the last year of her life. Being the people person that she was, Freda found another outlet to help others and express her love for children by helping with her niece and sister-in-law's daycare in Orrington. The children's love for Freda was demonstrated by the squeals of delight as "Aunt" Freda entered the door. Even the children loved her "nana" bread and her fresh fruit salad.
She is survived by her older sister, Florence Basford of Searsport; her younger brother, Aaron Basford and his wife, Jennifer, of Collingdale, Pa.; sister-in-law, Gloria Basford of Winterport; nieces, Jennifer (Basford) Cyr and her husband, Michael, of Orrington, Amy Basford of Oakland, Calif., Julia and Diana Basford of Collingdale, Pa.; nephew, Benjamin Basford of Collingdale, Pa.; great-nephews, Zachery and Cooper Cyr of Orrington; great-niece, Hannah Mae Cyr of Orrington; one special aunt, Christel (Basford) Ellis of Little Valley, N.Y.; and many cousins and loving friends.
Both her parents and three brothers, Adrian, Wallace and his twin, Wendall, who died as an infant, predeceased her.
