He received little formal education because his family moved from place to place when he was growing up. He was working on a large dairy farm in Derbyshire, England when he met Sarah. He continued to do farm work for about 10 years and then became a lamplighter. Every night he would light several hundred gas lamps and in the morning he returned and put them out. This was his occupation when he and his wife left for American with their 10 children.
It was while lighting the lamps that Jesse first heard the Mormon missionaries preaching the gospel. He was baptized in 1850. He became a branch president in Derbyshire and left England for America in 1864. They arrived in Salt Lake City on Sept. 20, 1864.
Sarah gave birth to her last baby in Ogden, Utah on Apr. 27, 1867. They settled in Hooper where they raised crops and fruit trees.
One night on his way to a church meeting, he tried to jump over a deep ditch and fell causing a severe hernia. He died two days later because proper medical care was not available.
